Sutartines: Ancient Polyphonic Songs of Lithuania

Sutartines (pronounced "soo-TAR-ti-nehz") are ancient Lithuanian songs for two to four voices. Although their origins are lost in the mists of time, they are mentioned in two 16th-century chronicles of the region. Women sang sutartines as working songs; men performed instrumental versions. We will listen to some examples of these heterophonic, often syncopated songs and discuss their place in European music history.
