Dance on the Shakespearean Stage: Text and Context
- ( Emily Winerock )
- Amphitheater on Saturday at 1:00PM
This lecture examines dance references in Shakespeare's plays, and what they can teach us about dancing in the late Renaissance. At least thirteen of Shakespeare's plays contain dance scenes, while nearly all the plays mention dance in the text. Together, they present a reasonably complete and nuanced picture of who, when, where, and why people danced in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and they provide essential context for the "what" and "how" we find in dancing manuals and archival sources. This lecture is designed to complement the workshop "Dance it trippingly": Staging Dances from and for Shakespeare Plays.
