An Overview of Arabo-Andalusian Music

This class will explore the various forms of Arabic music that originated in Al Andalus (Moorish Spain) and then dispersed throughout North Africa and the Near East after the Reconquista. We will survey the different schools and styles of music, listening to audio samples of each, and learn about the instruments used and some of the rhythms and modes they employed. Time and interest permitting, we will also learn to play some pieces of music.
