OPDB: Intro to Hurdy-Gurdy
- Robyyan Torr d'Elandris ( D S)
- State Room East on Thursday at 12:00PM
The One Person Dance Band series will educate the participant in historically informed instrumental choice and practice, enabling a solo performer to successfully provide music and rhythm for Renaissance dance. The hurdy-gurdy, vielle à roue (French), Drehleier (German), zanfona, viola de teclas (Spanish) is a stringed instrument that creates melody, percussion, and harmony all at the same time. It dates to at least the 11th Century CE, and was in use throughout Europe during the period of interest to the SCA. This session will introduce the instrument and its history, with discussion and demonstration of how it works. Several different example instruments will be demonstrated. Depending on attendance and interest students may get a chance to try playing. Reading music is not required.
